Sarazen and Lag are cousins. There is a lot to setting in this way- being ahead of the ball in rotation- in order to deal with the post impact acceleration to come. :)
You're ahead of where you were, and behind where you're going.

It makes it easier to pull up with the last three fingers if you do this and the club will be more secure in the hands. If you grip it on the ground it becomes more of a downward pressure with the thumb causing a downward release rather than forward.
