Wilson Staff FG Tour 100 irons

I know it is heresy on this site to discuss modern irons, but I'll risk it anyways.

Has anyone had a chance to try the Wilson FG Tour 100 irons? They brought them out in 2014 in honor of Wilson's 100 years of making clubs and are a nod to the '70's button backs. Longer hosels, more traditional lofts, get them 1/2 in shorter and you have traditional length as well. They look pretty sweet just wondering if anyone has hit them or checked them out?

Thanks for the feedback.

Les - Do you think the cost is worth it especially when there are so many really clean vintage Staff sets available at a fraction of that cost? I bet we could purchase and ABS a vintage set for less than the cost of these new ones. New is nice and these are pretty but I doubt they are any better than vintage gear. I do think it noteworthy that Wilson is making a classic blade for today's market.

Hi Les,
I haven't hit one since they don't seem to be anywhere, but I would love to give it a try. I'm not one to buy modern irons anymore, but some of them are fun to try here and there. I had a set of the original Nike Forged Blades for about 7 years and loved them.

My guess with these is they're going to feel firmer than vintage irons. They are made from 8620 steel, which isn't even a true carbon steel like 1018, 1025, 1030 etc... It's a firmer metal and my bet is they used a "form forging" process where they cast the club first and then do a couple strikes to finish it off with a "forging" of sorts. Whereas other forged clubs are purely bent and go through ~5-7 forging strikes to forge them into shape. So the feel and construction is a little different. The 8620 should be quite durable and last a long time.

I thought it was interesting they brought back the bore-through shaft for this model. Do you know if that is purely cosmetic or do they actually put the shaft all the way through?

You mean like these? I'm the highest bidder @ $20! They'll be on their way to you soon.

That's a great find. Am I the only one considering going in and stealing those from under Les with about 5 seconds left??

JK Les, I won't bid on them.

Is that the definition of cruel and unusual punishment?

After a conversation with Mike I ended up having him build me up a very nice set of Buttonbacks.

ABS spec length, lie, and loft. He put in TT X200 shafts and threw in a second PW bent to 52* for a gap wedge. I left the weights alone, only about 1/2 oz lighter than my '57 Staffs. My guess is the shafts are a bit lighter than the old Rocket shafts.

Taking them to the range tonight for a tryout.
