In the 90's Norman shot consistantly lower scores in tournaments over four rounds, he could post 4 rounds under 70 more consistantly. The 80's one day he would shot 67 and next shot 74 and this occured frequently...
Norman used raw talent in the 80's and grind 100's of balls a day to be as good as he was... His lower body mechanics and ground forces were shocking in the 80's.
If Norman had his lowerbody mechanics sorted in the 80's like he did in the 90's who knows how many more tournaments and Majors he could of won....
Norman was his own worst enemy, Steve Williams said overall Norman was the batter ball striker than Tiger, the difference was their mental game and attitude. Tiger has a dummy spit and over it 2 minutes later. Norman if he hit a bad shot he would dewel for the next 5 holes... If Norman had Tigers mental game, hands down would have been the best of all time...

Personally in my eyes Greg Norman was the best ball striker of all time and if he had of won more Majors he would have been recognised as the best ball striker of all time... Shame, he will never recieve credit he deserves for being one the best ever ball strikers...

Well, whichever version of Greg Norman you like, they were all pretty good...
When I first played against him in the fall of 1987, I had never seen anything like it, and when I actually hit balls next to him on the range, I had never heard anything like it either. I could also feel the ground shake when he hit the ball. It was even slightly intimidating! Peter Senior was also equally impressive to me. Although hit hit a lower ball than Greg, his shots had a piercing quality, and he had all the shots, and could work the ball around the course with fantastic precision, and when he was on, Senior didn't have any problem stealing golf trophies away from Norman or anyone else for the matter.

What they both shared were world class ground pressures and footwork. I certainly didn't leave my "tour of duty" wondering why I wasn't as good as those guys. If I were 14 again, I wouldn't be working on swinging flashlights along a wall, stalling my pivot and worrying about my flat left wrist that's for sure. I'd be working on post impact pivot thrust.

That "sound" is what I heard when I stood watching Hogan hitting balls in 1965 when I was 16. It was startling! It startled the players around Hogan too. They kept stopping to watch him hit balls!

I have not seen him hit balls, but I believe Sandy Lyle was the same for sheer noise and compression

Sandys masters was the tournament that got me interested in golf......

I always imagine seeing Sandy hit a 1 iron off the deck would have been amazing...

I also tried to copy his swing (badly)

I do remember nipping the ball off the turf and hitting loads of fairways and greens....

Then I got the Leadbetter video for christmas and it all went downhill for me

What I can't understand is why Lyle decided to change his swing after all his success?

I remember that video well. It was my first. Faldo and Leadbetter in Valderamma. I've since sent that video to Al Qaeda in Pakistan. Since then coalition forces have made some real progress along the Afghanistan/Pakistani boarder. I attribute that to the utter confusion that Leadbetter introduced to the game of golf and clearly the terrorist cells are feeling that confusion as well. ;)

A great little practice aid for next to nothing ;)

Styles,
This sounds interesting, and I can sure use the help. Can you elaborate on how to use the dowel? Thanks/eagle

Eagle,

Actually the diameter and length of the dowel needed is based on your genetics....I'll let Styles fill you in on the "fitting" part. ;)

On a less tawdry note - my guess is the dowel will determine the quality of the strike with the putter. If a perfectly square stroke of the putter impacts the side of the dowel properly it will roll straight. Any deviation makes the dowel spin or careen in a not-so-straight manner. I've seen a few putting practice aids that work in this manner.

My engineering side says you could also just glue two golf balls together. Perfect center alignment would be needed. At least you'd be using golf balls then.

Btw, getting the putting aid to roll properly is much, much tougher than it looks.

Cheers,
