This picture of Jack at Pebble Beach 7th hole 1972 US Open Golf.
Just hours before his historic "hit the pin with a 1 iron" 17th hole.

I was actually there in the gallery just to the right of the tee. The roar was something I will never forget.

I was at the '82 Open at Pebble following Jack. We were all expecting a playoff then we heard a roar from 17 - Watson just chipped in for birdie. Best thing about that day my best friend and I snuck onto the course to watch the tournament. No one bothered us for tickets. Great day of golf.

I agree that this is a more interesting way to play. Gary Player on #14 hitting a great drive (255 yds) and a 2 iron to get on a long par 4 (465 yards), wow. Today's tour it literally would be driver/wedge. And you're right, there really is no such thing as a 3 shot par 5 on tour anymore unless they hit one of their first two into the junk.

On a side note, I don't feel nearly as bad now about my 225-240 yard persimmon drives!

There was nothing like this in the Nicklaus Palmer Player Souchak match.... as it was an exhibition match.
A decade later, this photo of Jack on 7 at Pebble, it's the US Open! This is how brutal US Opens used to be set up.
Just off the edge of the green some knee high stuff. Think of Watson hacking out of the hay on 17 years later.

Interesting article, and Brandel makes a good point. Jack was the best ever, and yet we never talk of his swing being great. It was.
